The Yorkshire Wolds is a unique region with a distinct rural heritage and the High Wolds Heritage Group has been set up to catalogue and archive existing materials, provide IT and technology and equipment for internet research and oral history and provide display screens, wall cases and publications to communicate and share this rich heritage with the wider public before it is lost.

This newly formed group goes from strength to strength with an exciting programme of activities in the pipeline. One innovative project of particular interest and the subject of a recently submitted bid for a grant from ‘Your Heritage’ is a plan to install a Son et Lumiére in St. Mary’s Church, Thixendale. An audio guide to the church will provide visitors with an interpretation of the significant features of the building, especially the stained glass windows. Special lighting will be timed to illuminate each feature to coincide with the commentary and the whole system will be coin operated. Laminated written guides will be made available for those who prefer to access information this way. The group wants to involve volunteers in helping to research and write the audio script and the written guides.

The High Wolds Heritage Group will also be running workshops for children who would like to help in the production of ‘Children’s guides to the church’.
